Colleague - Dave Barclay
Dave Barclay is a world class Puppeteer, Animatronic Designer and Supervisor, a CG key frame Animator, and Director and Producer of animatronic and puppet projects for film and television. he has an extraordinary resume that includes many of the major motion picture of recent years. Dave and Robb first worked together over twenty years ago.
They collaborated on a TV series for the Children's Channel Called 'Huva' an eccentric monkey who lived in a treehouse. Dave and fellow puppeteer Mike Quin designed and built both Huva and "Thing' the alien that can be seen with Huva in the above picture. The show ran five days a week for two years in English and Dutch.
The next project that Dave and Mike worked on with Robb was the first TV series of the British 'Dennis the Menace'. This character should not be confused with the American 'Dennis the Menace'. Coincidentally both comic strip characters were created on either side of the Atlantic in the same month in 1951, the respective publishers decided to not let their characters exist outside of their own territories.
In 1990 Dennis was brought to life in a daily show, like Huva this was broadcast in English and Dutch. The British Dennis was an anarchic bully, he can be seen above with his dog Gnasher on the cover of a magazine. The show employed some interesting techniques; it was shot entirely against green screen, the puppeteers wore green leotards and operated the characters with rods, gloves and cables. Sometime there were as many as seven puppeteers working one puppet.
In recent years Dave moved to the US where he and Robb once again worked together. This time using Dave's OUTBODY system. This system allows a puppeteer to control a Computer Generated character in real time. We used this system on the Korbel 'Magic' commercial, to animate the Goldfish.
