Trained as a graphic designer and filmmaker, Robb Hart crosses adeptly between the worlds of commercials, television, documentaries, gaming and interactive media. His expansive wealth of experience and knowledge in visual effects and post-production, both on and off the set, informs his work as a director and how to turn a complex idea into reality.
Since graduating from London’s prestigious St. Martin’s School of Art with a degree in graphic design and specialization in photography and film, Robb has never stopped working, honing his multidisciplinary skills over the years as an editor, cameraman, film director, studio director, VFX supervisor, CG artist, and even sound recordist. This intimate understanding of all the moving parts of production means that Robb knows how to achieve the best creative solution for a project. A client and former producer at Young & Rubicam/Irvine recently called Robb, “One of commercial production’s best-kept secrets.” This is a moniker that Robb is doing his best to correct!
After successful stints in shooting documentaries, producing children’s television programming, and overseeing the launch of MTV Europe, Robb went to Virgin Interactive as Director of Digital Video, where he worked on VFX and action sequences in notable video game titles, as well as feature film spin-offs. Robb has directed many hours of video game cinematics including: “Star Trek: Klingon Academy” starring Christopher Plummer, and “Toonstruck’ starring Christopher Lloyd. He has finished and supervised the visual effects on many well-known music videos including: Reel Big Fish, Chopper One, Neve, MXPX, and Goldfinger.
In 1997, he launched An Ideal World, a production company and post-production studio, which counts: Acura, Barona, CHOC, Cox, Honda, Korbel, Kingston Technologies, K&N, LA Times, Mothers, Nissan, Paul Mitchell, Thermador, Toshiba, Vtech, Wienerschnitzel and Yokohama amongst the brands they have worked on.
In 2008, Robb was invited to become a member of the Visual Effects Society.
As a hands-on director, Robb draws on his vast array of talents to tackle the diverse challenges of making commercials. Running a successful VFX company has helped him to achieve his far-reaching visions as a director, and to master the technicalities involved in working with practical and CG elements or with multi-camera shoots, as well as with different production crews. It has also given him the opportunity to work with a range of actors – from big stars to non-actors – and to know how to elicit the best performances from them.
More importantly, Robb is in his element as a director, bringing the same enthusiasm and passion for the field as he did 30 years ago. No matter the intricacy of a concept or the size of a budget, Robb’s specialty is digging into his magpie of knowledge to come up with the right, and often pleasantly unexpected, answers.
Robb is also a photographer and traditional artist, his personal site can be found at www.robbhart.com
